iPhone versus Blackberry

Filed under: Gadget Stuff — gadgetblogger @ 12:09 am

There are two brands who have managed to make themselves stand out from the crowd in
the mobile phone market over the last couple of years. Apple`s iPhone has managed
to sell in its millions and provide the benchmark for smartphone technology that
leaves every other manufacturer trying to play catch-up. Blackberry on the other
hand have stuck predominantly to their business roots and won the favour of the
people who make the world tick, including the President of the USA. In order to
decide whether the iPhone or Blackberry offer the best all round product the
pedigree and street credibility need to be put to one side. It is always useful to
consider the phones on their individual merits before coming to a conclusion.

Apple iPhone
The most recent iPhone, the 3Gs, has only been out for a couple of months and it is
very hard to tell the difference between it and previous models. Most of the changes
are internal ones, to both the hardware and the software powering the iPhone. The
3Gs has up to 32GB of on board storage as well as now featuring stereo Bluetooth
compatibility and a faster processor and graphics chip for applications and gaming.
The built in digital camera has also been improved with a 3.2 mega pixel sensor and
the ability to record video and send multimedia messages. In terms of the software
there are some subtle updates including a function that allows you to copy, cut and
paste text and images from any source, whether it is a web page or an email. The
iPhone has a fully touch sensitive interface and for writing longer messages you can
use it in landscape mode with a full QWERTY keyboard available onscreen. The 3Gs can
be bought in conjunction with pay as you go and pay monthly contracts through O2 in
the UK. It is included free on monthly price plans costing over £44 and if you want
a more modest price plan you will also have to pay a one off fee for the phone
itself. If you want to buy the iPhone on pay as you go it will cost between £400 and
£550 depending on whether you choose the 16Gb or the 32GB model.

Blackberry
There are several Blackberry handsets on the market at the moment, but for the
purposes of this discussion we will be examining the Bold 9000. It has a large
screen, bulky design and a full tactile QWERTY keypad. The keypad, the Bold`s email
functionality and software that allows it to become integrated into a busy business
lifestyle make it attractive to a certain type of customer. It lacks the power and
the popularity of the iPhone, but there is a strong market for Blackberry`s
products. This newest version has been rated as excellent by many professional
reviewers.

Choosing a Phone
You should pick a phone based on whether you will be able to get the most out of its
features and if you can afford it. The iPhone is more powerful, has better
multimedia functionality and a wealth of software available for download. It is one
of the many must-have gadgets for men On the other hand it is many times more expensive than the bold and doesn`t have the same level of respect in the business world. The Bold is far better suited to typing emails and general networking. With its solid multimedia capabilities it will keep up to some extent with the iPhone, but the camera and measly on board storage may put some off. Because the iPhone is exclusive to O2 UK there is little competition, perhaps explaining the high cost of pay monthly price plans.
