MVix MX-760HD - Video Streaming to your TV over Wi-Fi

MVix MX-760HD

I love movies.. But the problem with video stored on your hard disk is viewing it. I hate viewing mpeg, divx, xvid, avi videos on a monitor. Videos need to be on a big widescreen TV to fully appreciate them.

So whats the dream solution?. A box that connects to your wireless LAN that will enable you to connect to shared drives on your PC and stream video direct to your TV. No more cables, no more burning Cd’s..

Well, I was browsing the web looking for a device back in December 2006 and I found this fantastic Mvix Unit. The answer to my prayers.
This box is quite compact and sits nicely next to my TV. It comes with an aerial for connectivity to your wireless LAN although an optional internal hard disk is not included in the price. Ive added one but purely for use when Im on the move. Its nice to be able to take your video files, photos and music with you when you are on the move. If you have a hard disk fitted inside the unit you can use it just like a USB hard disk by plugging it into your PC and copying files directly to the unit. You can also connect external USB hard disks to this device.. cool huh. The player also has multiple outputs including optical out, and DVI.

The unit lights up nicely with several indicator lights for wireless, network, ide and usb. It also shows a representation of what you are seeing on the screen. It was fairly quick to setup too. I set mine up and got it on the wireless LAN within 5 mins. Now let me show you some screenshots. The unit also included a remote control.. This is essential for coach potatoes like me :-)

MVIX

This is the main setup screen. From here you can configure your network, wireless lan settings, TV settings (such as whether you want widescreen or standard) etc etc.

First you open up the network config screen. This is nice and easy. Either configure as dhcp or static IP. I prefer to make my wireless devices static so I used the latter.

mvix

mvix

Once you’re done here you move to the wireless config screen where you enter your wireless LAN’s SSID and wep security details. Once you are done here you should have connectivity to your wireless LAN.. :-) If you dont have a wireless LAN then you can just connect a cat 5 cable in to the back of the mvix. It just means you have a cat5 cable routed around your house.

Now you need to share files on your PC to take full advantage of this little box of tricks. It can be done on XP fairly easily by sharing folders and allowing guest access. This Mvix hardware will login using the default windows guest account.

I actually didnt have much luck with XP so opted to use Linux as I only use XP for gaming. Using Samba file sharing I was up and running within 10mins with my shares appearing on my TV.. :-) . Im running Debian for anyone who is interested.

Mission accomplished.

My samba config is as follows:

smb.conf

Once Id configured samba all was good. I could view my video share folders on my widescreen TV.. :-)

This player is fantastic. So far its played anything Ive thrown at it.. Avi, Xvid, Mpeg, Divx, Mp3’s, Jpg pictures and the list goes on and on.

Pro’s

  • Stream your video files over your wireless LAN directly to your TV effortlessly (no matter what video format)
  • Easily watch slideshows of your family pictures stored on your PC’s hard disk over your Wi-Fi Network
  • Play your music collection stored on your PC’s hard disk over your Wi-Fi Network (although interface needs improving)
  • Easily travel with huge collection of video, music and photos and playback at your desination. Ideal for presentations or when visiting friends.

Cons’s

  • Doesnt like huge video files. By huge im talking 8Gb +
  • MP3 playback interface needs improving. Difficult to navigate and play multiple music files
  • Doesnt allow you to copy files over Wi-Fi directly to the Mvix local hard disk. I believe firmware will be released shortly to resolve this.

Q - Where can I buy one of these fantastic gadgets?

A - If you are in the UK can buy one here with a 320gb internal hard disk included. If you are based in the USA you can buy one here.

  1. Doesn’t have HDMI connector. Only DVI.

  2. Well spotted Ben. A slight typo. :-)

  3. Doesn’t have HDMI connector but does work fine when using a cable with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other. This is how I have mine plugged into my TV. Never had a problem playing 6-9GB DVD ISO images that I stream from my Samba file server. I only stream media though, I don’t use an internally installed hard drive. I agree the music interface could use work. Also waiting for WPA and FTP server to be addressed in upcoming firmware update. Overall thought quite happy with the purchase. Address a few niggles with firmware and it will be fabulous.

  4. Greetings

    Well written.

You mentioned that since you use SMB for file serving that it was up an running in seconds. I have a couple of Vantec NexStar LX File Servers (HD enclosures) that use SMB but with no luck browsing them. The mvix “sees” them but once connected cannot see the contents of the drives. IOW it sees the root but it appears empty. Any idea why?

    Much appreciated.

  5. Hi Paul, thanks

Have you tried taking a copy of my samba file and tweaking it to match your needs.
    Are you using Debian?

One problem I experienced was where I could view the folder on Mvix but couldnt see the contents. This sounds similar to yours. This was down to linux software firewall blocking the mvix device. Once I opened up ports for samba everything worked fine.

If you arent familiar with configuring your linux firewall i highly recommend firestarter. This application enables you to easily see what traffic is being rejected by your linux firewall. You can easily create a rule to allow specific traffic just by clicking a button.

You can get firestarter by running

    apt-get install firestarter

Let us know how it goes. It does sound like a firewall issue to me if you can view the folder.

  6. Hi,

Great review. This box is getting there, but I’m still looking for Nirvana. Not just wireless NAS connected to the hard-wired player, but a wireless player, utilising the broadband wireless network we all now have at home, to stream to multiple clients. Hence, someone sitting downstairs in the lounge could be watching a movie, kids upstairs watching their favourite cartoons, while someone cooking in the kitchen listening to internet radio or their favourite music tracks. Oh, and I’d also like a wireless sound system!

Now I’ve seen various components of these, but nothing as one complete unit. How close is the MX-760HD to providing this all-in-one box?

    Regards,

    Khurrum

  7. Khurrum, The MX-760HD isnt close to achieving what you desire. I think we would all like a device as you say that will multi-task multiple outputs at the same time. I think this device will arrive but id give it a few years.

The MX-760HD is merely the start of this. Just as the ZX spectrum was the start of home computing. We will look back on the MX-760HD in a few years and say hey this thing was so slow, lacks this feature etc etc but Ill always remember that Mvix got there first :-)

  8. Quick question - is the LCD screen on this model good enough to be able to search for, access and play audio files without having to use the TV?

    Thanks.

    Comment by Phil — April 25, 2007 @ 12:46 pm

  9. Phil. In response to your question the LCD is fine for navigation if you stand up close to the unit as its a small screen. As to searching this isnt available. Its a case of manual navigation through folders currently “unfortunately”. So to summarise you dont need to have the tv switched on but a search feature isnt available yet. Maybe a newer version of firmware will improve this.
Although audio streaming is good I think that Mvix have shifted their focus towards development of the movie streaming interface.

  10. The review and snapshots has helped quite a bit in a search for the right media box, but I was wondering if you were able to successfully stream 720p content via wireless without glitching and/or desyncing problems? I read where dvd5-9 work great but do you know if the mpeg2 vs mpeg4 compression make a difference on the processing unit?

I currently use XBMC and the only thing that would make me upgrade is to play hd content over the air and I was hoping you could help me out!

    Thanks,
    Jay.

    Comment by Jay — September 9, 2007 @ 8:27 am

  11. Hi Jay - The Mvix Wireless HD MX-760HD supports full 1,080p HD. It has a DVI connector to connect to your HD TV.

You may be aware you can download and endode videos in Divx HD format.

You can read more about it here: http://www.divx.com/hd/#faq3
You can view some HD videos here - http://stage6.divx.com - In the search box type HD to search for HD format videos

If you stream these videos over the wireless connection then the quality will be in HD format. I must admit that most movies I watch are in DivX HD format and I havent noticed any significant glitching issues.

Im using Linux with Samba to host my video files and a Vigor2800VG wireless router.

Let me know if you need any assistance.

  12. Can this device support playlists for music ?

    Comment by Gerry — January 16, 2008 @ 6:30 pm

  13. Hi Gerry. Unfortunately this device doesnt support playlists.
It cannot play M3U, WPL, or ASX playlists. You can however set up your own custom playlists however this is a little cumbersome. Hopefully a firemware update will improve this going forward.

  14. Hi, just wondering if this can play dvd ripped to harddrive on network.(IFO and VOB Files). Will the playback be smooth on wireless or does it need to be hard wired to network. Also can you browse through dvd menu like playback on DVD Disk on DVD Player. I basically have a lot of DVD,s ripped to hard drive, and solely looking to playback these dvds to a TV. Thanks Rob

  15. Great Info! Thanks for the post

    Comment by Keith — March 5, 2008 @ 7:15 pm

  16. Rob,

If you are planning on IFO and VOB files I would definitely recommend direct cabling. The bandwidth involved with these files will be huge. If this is your plan Id probably recommend you just plug a laptop (one that that has s-video output) into your tv and connect to your other pc via UTP cables.

The Mvix is more suited to DivX, Xvid, Mpeg, Avi formats where the video has been compressed to allow streaming without the requirement for a huge amount of bandwidth or processing power.

  18. I have thes player, however I have 2 problems, maybe someone can help?

    1. When trying to play videos wireless over the network through the network shares it tries to load the file but hangs, I left it for a good 15 minutes and it never starts. Works fine on the LAN cable connection.

    2. When I download a DIVX HD file .avi it will never play, says unsupported file type. Normal DIVX files work fine.

Any help would be much appriciated.

    Thanks
